Carnival 2010 launched

A fresh batch of Vincy Mas view cards, along with a brand new poster, heralded the beginning of what stakeholders hope to be one of the best carnival festivals in recent times.{{more}}

The poster and view cards, two of the most important weapons in the Carnival Development Corporation’s promotional arsenal, were displayed at the first press conference of the year on Tuesday at the corporation’s office at Victoria Park.

The five cards depict the various components of Vincy Mas, with action and photos from the most recent edition of the ‘Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean’.

At Tuesday’s press conference, Chairman of the CDC Dennis Ambrose revealed that the cards had been available since October last year, and were presented at the World Travel Market conference in the United Kingdom.

The design for the view cards was done by graphic designer Shaun Young, who is also the CDC webmaster and a member of its marketing team.

The photographs were taken by Oris Robinson.

“The poster is a vibrant, close up image of the Queen of Carnival Miss Jenilee Glasgow, herself a veteran of mas,” Ambrose explained.

Glasgow hails from the mas band KFC Players International, which recorded its fourth straight Band of the Year title in 2009.

“The poster was designed by a young Vincentian Akley Olton, a second year student pursuing studies in fine arts at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados. I think you will agree that this is a remarkable poster.”

The logos of the festival’s super platinum and platinum sponsors: The National Lotteries Authority, LIME, LIAT, the St. Vincent Brewery, SVG Broadcasting Corporation and The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority are also found on the poster and view cards.

The view cards, which can be used as post cards, also contain the 2010 carnival calendar of activities.

This includes the official launch of Vincy Mas on May 8, Miss SVG on May 29, and Fantastic Friday on June 18, along with the official events of the June 25 to July 6 celebrations.

Speaking about this year’s carnival program, Ambrose pointed that there will be no ‘GLOW’ fete this year, and a marked absence of Fire Fete in collaboration with panorama finals.

Ambrose indicated that the carnival website www.carnivalsvg.com was up and running and featured a ten minute presentation of carnival highlights available there, as well as the latest Skinny Fabulous music video.

According to Ambrose, these flyers and posters will be distributed during this year’s Trinidad and Tobago carnival celebrations which culminate this weekend and early next week.

Special emphasis will be placed on the Soca Monarch competitions which take place later today, and will see Vincentians Zoelah and Skinny Fabulous competing.
