Botanic Gardens now a National Trust protected site

Cabinet has given approval for the Declaration of the historic Botanic Gardens as a Protected National Heritage site. The application for the Heritage Status was made by Minister of Culture René Baptiste on behalf of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines National Trust.{{more}}

This Status places the Gardens on the Heritage Trust and will help with conservation and preservation measures for the unique plant life; the Nichols Aviary and Doric Dome.

The National Trust will place a brass plate at an appropriate place to indicate the National Heritage Status. The Gardens was established in 1795 under Governor Robert Melville.

The National Bird-The Vincentian Parrot, the Amazona Guildingii, can be seen at the Aviary. It was named after one of the Gardens benefactors- Rev. Guilding, who identified the magnificent bird as unique to the Vincentian landscape.
