Retailer courts youths for tv reading opportunity

The opportunity for a primary school student to read a segment of SVG TV’s Evening News is just one incentive for those participating in the Courts St. Vincent OECS Reading Competition.{{more}}

The competition for eight- and nine-year-olds, which begins on October 5, with the Finals slated for the October 16, will see one student from each primary school competing in nine zones.

Courts head of Marketing Alexis John said at a press conference on Monday to launch the local leg of the competition that apart from being featured on SVG TV, the local winner would receive EC $2,000 and represent the country at the regional finals in Dominica later in October.

John added that the second placed local winner would receive $1,000, third place $750 and fourth and fifth places $500 each, while the winning school also would receive $2,000.

The finalists will also receive savings accounts, reading material and trophies.

The winner of the regional finals will receive $5000.

The national competition, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, will be conducted in three categories: a prepared passage, an impromptu passage and a comprehension piece.

Simultaneous competitions are set to take place in St. Lucia, Grenada, Antigua and St. Kitts. The competition in Dominica has been won by Marie Ange Emanuel.

OECS Marketing and Communications Executive Anita James, speaking at the launch, indicated that the reading competition follows in the vein of the company’s OECS comedy competition, which took place in 2007 and 2008.

James said these events, and other to follow are part of Courts’ efforts to promote Literacy.

Expressing excitement and pleasure to be a part of the competition were sponsors Scotia Bank, SVG Television, Gaymes Book Centre and Multi- Graphics Ltd.
