The FirstCaribbean Unsung Heroes programme was first introduced in 2003 and has since become the flagship for volunteerism in the region. The programme seeks to recognize and honour those people who have contributed selflessly to the development of their various communities with little or no reward. Itâs funded and administered by the FirstCaribbean International Comtrust Foundation.
The programme is conducted on two levels, nationally and regionally. All seventeen countries in which First Caribbean operates hold a local event at which candidates are nominated and a winner selected. The local winner is then entered into the regional competition. Since its introduction, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has already produced two regional heroes. Last yearâs winner was Veolant Cupid of Lauders who also went on to win the regional competition. In 2006, Jestina Charles also brought home the regional Unsung Heroes title.
The local Committee will meet this week to review the nominations and select the local 2009 Unsung Hero.
