The Ministry of Education (MOE) was represented by Education Officer Ingrid Robertson, who spent most of her teaching career at the PBSS and was mentored by then PBSS principal Anesta Rodney in the Home Economics Department.
Robinson reminded the packed audience of the schoolâs proud traditions and achievements. She also encouraged the graduates to live up to the schoolâs motto âReach Out and Achieveâ.
In delivering the feature address, Christopher George took the audience on a nostalgic journey of the early years of the school, which opened its doors in September, 1976. George was a part of the first batch of students at the PBSS. After graduating, he taught at the school until two years ago when he was appointed Principal of the West Wood primary school.
âI was not among the smarter students, but I had a desire to succeed,â George said. âKeep your heads up high and reach for the sky and make the best of now,â he continued.
Student of the year Vasheca Wilson, in a passionate address, encouraged her fellow graduates to use their talents wisely. Wilson has had a sterling academic career at the PBSS and was selected by York University of Canada to attend the Emerging Global Leaders workshop in Barbados in 2008. She will return to Barbados in October to continue the program.
Two other schools in the Chateaubelair area also held their ceremonies recently.
The Chateaubelair Methodist School held their ceremony on July 1 at the Chateaubelair Methodist Church. Owanni Adams, with his average of over 90 per cent in the recent Common Entrance Examination, was named student of the year.
The Bethel Pre-school also held their graduation on Tuesday, June 30, at Plan Village, Chateaubelair. Bethel is the oldest pre-school in the area and for the past three years has offered a $500 scholarship to the student who gains the best results in the Common Entrance Examinations each year.
Last yearâs scholarship was awarded to Melvisha Harry, who attends the St Josephâs Convent Kingstown, while in 2007, it went to Jantay Lorraine who attends the St Vincent Grammar School. This yearâs recipient is Owanni Adams, who will attend the St Vincent Grammar School.(AC)
