West St George launches peer counseling. school band

Wednesday, June 3rd, was a morning of extra curricular activities for the West St. George Secondary School, as students, teachers and parents witnessed the launch of the school’s band and the graduation of 13 peer counselors.{{more}}

At a special assembly at the school on Wednesday, June 3rd, thirteen of the 20 students who started the peer counseling and mentoring programme four months ago received their t-shirts and badges, in recognition of having completed the training. Three students are still in the training process.

School counselor Jennifer Marshall said that the batch of students, mostly from the third forms, were trained in areas that would affect them and their peers, including self awareness, self esteem, dealing with conflict and sex education.

She indicated that it was vital for the students to be trained in these areas, in order to effectively help other students in times of need. Marshall said she hoped that the students and others who follow in their path would become leaders in the institution as well as in their communities.

The students recognized were Venall Henry, Edson Davis, Omario Johnson, Cameron Conliffe, Nevan Chotay, Reynold Fergusson, Millingy Wilkinson, Oceana Phillips, Molesia Wright, Gerolina John, Stephnie Williams Moricsia Baptiste and Omanny Cordice.

Following the graduation exercise, the students and faculty were treated to music from the school’s band on their first official outing.

The band, which consists of five students and the school’s musical director Jerome Samuel, is assisted by Walford McKie, Physical Education Teacher, and Junior John.The students who make up the band are Jamesley Questelles, Kenroy Guy, Josiah Louie, Omanie Cordice, and Stephanie Mascoll. (JJ)
