Jems launches Fruit Tree-Per-Household campaign

As part of a food security and reforestation program, JEMS Progressive Community Organization is embarking on a tree-planting project, giving a fruit tree and a calabash (bolee) tree to every interested household within the Southeast sector of mainland St. Vincent.{{more}}

The project launch is scheduled in conjunction with World Environmental Day, today, Friday, June 5, with the planting of the first trees on the property of the Roberts household opposite the St. Clair Dacon Secondary School in Carapan. Members of the community are cordially invited to attend the tree-planting ceremony which begins at 1:30 p.m.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and the Environment Lansford Weekes will be the featured speaker and plant the trees together with members of JEMS and the Roberts household.

Following the tree-planting ceremony at the Roberts home, the focus will shift to the St. Clair Dacon Secondary School where members of the school’s Environmental Club will plant trees in the school’s agricultural plot. This year marks the 13th anniversary of the establishment of the club by JEMS, and the planting of the trees will be part of the club’s anniversary celebration.

In planning the Fruit-Tree-per-Household Campaign, JEMS president Andrew Simmons remarked that “the project is consistent with the JEMS philosophy of empowering individuals and helping them improve the lives of their families and communities by encouraging self sufficiency, environmental responsibility, and sustainable livelihood development.” The fruit of the calabash (bolee) trees will be use in a future handicraft enterprise.

Communities included in the project include Stubbs, Enhams, Brighton, Carapan, McCarthy, Joseph Land, Junction, Victoria Village, Diamond, Belmont, Calder, Revierre, Glamorgan, Choppins and Bonhomme.

Residents of these communities interested in receiving trees for their property should call one of the following individuals to schedule planting: Wadie Simon, 432-8510; Bernard Sayers, 528-2155; or Viola Grant, 433-8991.

The project is funded by a grant from the United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility
