Union Island airport opens one day ahead of schedule

The Director of Airports in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Corsel Robertson, said on Tuesday, that the Union Island airport is open for business, one day ahead of schedule.{{more}}

The airport was closed for rehabilitation work on May 4th 2009, and was scheduled for re-opening on May 20th.

But Director Robertson says that airline operators were informed that the airport will be functional one day earlier, and that flights have been operating in and out of Union Island since Tuesday.

Under the rehabilitation programme, the runway, taxiway and apron areas were re-surfaced, and the markings in these areas were refreshed.

There was some work done to the terminal building, and Robertson says that this will continue, in the overall effort to improve the service to customers and operators.

A contract was signed between the government and CCA Limited, to the value of EC$4.5 million dollars, to carry out the rehabilitation work.

CCA will continue construction work on the sea protection areas of the airport.
