Anthony-Jordan named Teacher of the Year

A Vincentian woman has been named Teacher of the Year by a Missionary Society in the United States.

Marion Anthony-Jordan was named the Minnie Pearson Area Women’s Missionary Society (MPA WMS) 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year at the organization’s Annual Banquet, which was held on Saturday, April 24, 2009. Anthony-Jordan, who is originally from Troumaca, is the daughter of Leopold Anthony and his late wife Eno. A former student of the Girls’ High School, Anthony-Jordan taught at the Troumaca Ontario Secondary School before migrating to the USA.

Each nominee had to submit information on highlights of their teaching history; education; proud moments; church and community activities. A panel of judges selected by the MPA WMS Executive Board determined the winner based on the information each nominee submitted.

Among Anthony-Jordan’s teaching highlights is that she reluctantly started her teaching career in 1977 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines as a Primary School 1st grade teacher. After she completed the two-year Teacher Education certification program from the University of the West Indies, she became the first teacher in the island to teach both needlework and woodwork in the same school year.

Anthony-Jordan completed a Master of Education degree, with a major in Curriculum and Instruction in Business and Marketing Education, at North Carolina State University (NCSU), in April 2008. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Averett College (now Averett University), Danville, Virginia.

The Minnie Pearson Area WMS is one of four areas in the Western North Carolina Conference (WNCC). It includes 23 local AME churches in Alamance, Caswell, Durham, Orange, and Person Counties.

Anthony-Jordan has been a member of Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church for 17 years. She is in her 10th year as a Career Technical Education teacher at Southern Middle School and in her second year as a part time instructor with the Small Business Center of Piedmont Community College.
