Mothers’ Union marks 60th anniversary

The Mothers’ Union in the Archdeaconry of St. Vincent and the Grenadines celebrates its 60th anniversary from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th May, 2009, under the theme “Cost of Relationships”.{{more}}

The celebrations begin on Friday 8th May with an awards ceremony at the Catholic Pastoral Centre, followed by a bus tour to the new Rabacca Bridge on Saturday 9th. Celebrations culminate on Sunday 10th with a thanksgiving Service at the St. George’s Cathedral beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The Mothers’ Union was founded in England in 1876 by Mary Sumner, the wife of a priest. Sumner started this organisation, “to teach mothers the true meaning of being a wife and mother, the great responsibility of parents for their children, the Power of prayer and example”.

The local Mothers’ Union was started here in 1949 by Evelyn Mann, an English woman, who was invited to the Windward Islands by Bishop Tonks.

The St. George’s Cathedral Branch was the first branch formed. Today, there are thirteen Mothers’ Union branches in the archdeaconry of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Representatives from the Dioceses of the Windward Islands, Barbados, Guyana and the USA. will be attending the celebration.
