Lowmans Windward to get Library and Information Technology Centre

The Lowmans Windward Anglican Primary School will soon have a Library and Information Technology Centre to aid in tackling its literacy problems.{{more}}

On Monday, April 20, the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Social Investment Fund (SVGSIF) signed an agreement with the school to fund EC$ 100,000 towards the project.

The agreement was signed at a special ceremony held on the school’s compound.

The project was initiated by the Parent-Teacher Association of the school in recognition of the challenges students are experiencing with literacy and numeracy.

The programme will also be extended to the wider community.

The money given by SVGSIF will be spent to prepare and network a room within the school for the library and IT Centre, purchase furniture, computers, books, educational material and install the internet connection.

Headteacher of the school Otto Sam said he was grateful to the SVGSIF for its contribution and the project was timely because of urgency of the problem. He said some of the students were not “up to scratch” with their reading levels.

SVGSIF also came in for high praises from Senator Saboto Caesar, a member of the South Central Windward Development Organisation.

“We are going to get something which is excellent,” he told students, parents and well wishers attending the ceremony.

He thanked the teachers for the hard work they have been doing with the students.

The ceremony was also addressed by Chief Education Officer Susan Dougan. Dougan said SVGSIF was working along with the Education Ministry in delivering quality education throughout the country.

She urged the parents to continue to pledge their support to the children and the school and promised that the Ministry would continue to work with relevant agencies to improve literacy in St.Vincent and the Grenadines.

The PTA and the community will put EC$20,000 towards the project.
