Eight Miss SVG contestants sashed

Vincentians were introduced to the eight contestants who will contest this year’s Miss SVG pageant when the young women were sashed by their sponsors on Sunday.{{more}}

Surrounded by family members and wellwishers, the delegates made their first public appearance at the Kingstown Cruise Ship Terminal, where they were introduced by coordinator of the CDC’s Beauty Shows committee Cheryl Rodriguez.

Rodriguez described the women as having “beauty and brains”, and said they would be the first to take part in a more refined pageant, which takes place at the Victoria Park on May 30th.

The sponsors were also thanked by Rodriguez, as well as the CDC’s Chief Executive Officer Ashford Wood and Minister of Culture Rene Baptiste for their contribution in a period of global economic turmoil.

This year, one new company has stepped forward to sponsor a contestant, while seven others have returned to show their support to the pageant and Carnival on a whole.

The contestants and sponsors are: 22-year-old Tenille Austin, representing FirstCaribbean International Bank; Kristell Cambridge, 22, Miss Mustique Company Ltd.; Newcomer Williams Agencies and Fragrances will be represented by 23-year-old Eshurnia Glasgow, while 22-year-old Yasmeen Hadaway represents LIME. The National Lotteries Authority is represented by two of the contestants: Kimorra Lavia, 21, Miss Super 6, and Nickilla Slater- Bridgewater, 23, Miss Lotto.

Eighteen-year-old Asmara Whiskey is being sponsored by the Caribbean Medical Imaging Centre, while 20-year-old Veronique Williams is being sponsored by Darcheville Construction, Equipment Sales Caribbean Ltd; a St Lucia based company, which sponsored the reigning Miss SVG Ronique Dellimore last year.

Over the next few weeks, the contestants will be involved in a number of activities leading up to the pageant. This includes an appearance at the launch of Vincy Mas this Saturday at the chamber of commerce car park, meeting the media, motorcades, and school visits, among other events. (JJ)
