Vincentian inventor cops top prize

Vincentian Vernel Young emerged supreme at the recently concluded “Go Creative”: Regional Young Inventors and Innovation Competition held in Trinidad and Tobago. Other competitors in his category came from Jamaica, Bahamas and Barbados.{{more}}

Vernal Young, a promising programmer, copped the top prize of the “Go Creative”: National Young Inventors and Innovation Competition (SVG) with his innovation “Zeke’s Drum Set”. According to the designer, the computer based software allows users to interact with a drum set and low tenor steel pan. The simple design permits users to follow instructions and quickly grasp the connection between the location of notes and the sound produced. And for the more expressive users, this programme supports the addition of human interface devices such as the Nintendo Wii controls. The transition from software to the actual instrument is “as easy as Sunday Morning Expressions”.

One year ago, Young entered the local leg of the Competition to gain exposure in the programming field. Today, he is busy using his spare time developing another software application. The young man with the big heart envisions that his software will be used to assist in the delivery of educational content. Persons can interact with the software by practicing programming, adding new features and creating new applications using this platform. Imagine downloading this program on your cell phone and practicing at your leisure.

The “Go Creative” Project was made possible from funds provided by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the National Institute for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST) of Trinidad and Tobago. Vernal Young’s participation was made possible by the Caribbean Council for Science and Technology (CCST). The local component of the project was implemented by the Science and Technology Unit in the Ministry of Telecommunications, Science, Technology and Industry.
