SJCK Young Leaders journey to Tobago Cays
On Saturday 4th April to Tuesday, 7th April, 2009, the young leaders of the St. Josephâs Convent Kingstown journeyed to the Southern Grenadines.{{more}}
The weekend visit was part of their project in this yearâs RBTT Young Leaders program. The theme for this yearâs competition is – âThe Green Revolution, Global Challenge, Regional Responsibility, National Focusâ.
The twenty-one student contingent visited Mayreau, Union Island, Tobago Cays, and Mopion (where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed). The group is interested in preserving the natural resources of the Grenadines especially that of the Tobago Cays.
The Tobago Cays is comprised of five islands surrounded by barrier reefs that not only provide calm waters for swimming, but also a home to a variety of wildlife. It is a protected marine park where a host of activities occur, among them snorkeling, and bird watching.
The purpose of the visit was to raise public awareness of the effects of global warming on these islands of the Grenadines. The islands, in their delicate nature are prone to beach erosion, depleting fresh water resources, and the enlargement of animal and plant species. It is the hope that by doing this project persons will do their part to save our planet. On the islands, the group participated in tree planting exercises, distribution of flyers, and organized clean-up campaigns.
The group is gracious for the help of Mr. Dublin from the Tobago Cays Board and Father Mark DaSilva of the Catholic Church on Mayreau.
