Five vie for Miss Stubbs Heritage

Five beautiful young ladies will be vying for the Miss Stubbs Heritage this weekend.{{more}}

The pageant, which will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at the Stubbs Pre-School, at 8:00 p.m, will see Radiekah Doyle, Aphesha Matthews, Tasheka Thomas, Rosita Polin, and Anica May, vie for the coveted title.

Doyle, a 16-year-old student of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, with big dreams of becoming a hairdresser, has experience from three previous shows. Representing the Sun Flower, Doyle said she is looking forward to having a better showing this time around.

Matthews will be taking the stage as Miss Orchid. The 17-year-old Community College student has aspirations of becoming a certified accountant. She has previous experience from Miss Stubbs Independence 2004, and Miss Diamond 2008, of which she was adjudged the Queen.

“I think the crown will be for the judges to decide, but I’m confident that the crown is mine,” said Matthews, who enjoys playing Netball, writing songs, and modeling.

Thomas will be strutting her stuff as Miss Hibiscus. The 17-year-old Adelphi Secondary student wants to become a nurse. She said that she has the support of her family and is confident that she has what it takes to become the Queen.

Polin told SEARCHLIGHT that her dream is to become a doctor. The 16-year-old St.Clair Dacon Secondary School student said she is hoping to go out there and do her best, and leave the rest to the judges. She will be representing the Water Lily.

May, who will represent the Bird of Paradise, said she would like to become a nurse. The 17-year-old student of the Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia said that although she is participating in her first pageant, she hopes that the judges will be impressed with her performance and award her the title.

Marsha John, co-coordinator of the pageant, said she was moved to stage the show on her own, even though she doesn’t have any sponsorship.

“Some of the young ladies approached me about participating in pageants, and other activities such as drama. They believe that nothing is taking place in the area and it is stifling their talent,” said John, winner of the Miss South Windward Pageant in 1990.

John said she enjoys harnessing the talent of young people, especially those who like to make a positive contribution to their community. John is also a title holder of the JEMS Miss Emancipation and a 1st runner up of the Miss Easterval Pageant.

She said patrons can expect a good package that will be judged in the areas of Swim Wear, Talent, African Wear, and Interview.
