Police Officer receives Law degree

When Corporal Colin John was granted his wish to be transferred from Union Island to work on mainland St Vincent in 2006 so that he could attend A’ Level classes in Law and Economics, he had one thing on his mind – obtaining a Law degree.{{more}}

Three years later, and two ranks higher, Station Sergeant John now holds a Bachelor of Laws degree with Upper Second Class honours from the Holborn College in London, England.

Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday, March 25, the 21-year veteran of the Local Constabulary said that it has been a very challenging three years, but it paid off in the end. John stated that it had always been his dream to pursue Law as it is related to the profession in which he is currently engaged.

John says he plans to put his knowledge into practice when he returns to his police duties next month. An elated John admitted that the most difficult part of his studies was not having his wife and daughter around.

John thanked God and his wife and daughter for their unwavering support. He also thanked the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines. He appealed to other officers in the Force to take hold of the opportunities when they arise. “I don’t think persons should just feel comfortable that they are collecting a pay cheque at the end of the month. They should market themselves and have many options open to them in the future,” John opined.

Not satisfied with just a Law degree, John will be embarking upon further studies in September this year in England at the College of Law to do the Bar Vocational course to become a Barrister. He is also a member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in England. John is presently attached to the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Force.(KW)
