Karib Cable Kite flying climaxes

Celebrating yet another successful year, Karib Cable brought down the curtains on its annual Kite Flying event on Sunday, March 22nd, at Argyle.{{more}}

In its 11th year of operation, the Kite Flying event took place over a period of three weekends in Georgetown – March 8th; Bequia – March 15th, and Argyle – March 22nd. Although the number of registered participants at the Georgetown event saw a decrease from last year, the numbers at Bequia and Argyle experienced a hike.

“Argyle stands out as the mecca of the event with over 120 registered participants and, at least another 100 fun flyers,” Karib Cable Marketing Manager Justin John relayed. The plethora of kites that littered the sky at the Argyle event was surely a testament to this. John also added that as this is the last year that Argyle will be used as a venue (due to the international airport construction), this event was designated as a tribute to deceased Mas Band Leader Roy ‘Dragon’ Ralph.

John was visibly elated at the triumph of this year’s Kite Flying. “The creativity we saw, particularly in Bequia and at Argyle, definitely raised the level of events. We were also very happy to see the number of families that turned out.”

Moreover, John believes that the yearly event has fostered a good relationship between the public and Karib Cable. “It helps that the public sees that Karib Cable is giving back directly… the prizes that we give away are worth well over $10,000… At each event, there is a minimum of 18 prizes to be won, and, often, special awards are handed out.”

At the Bequia event, the winners in the ‘under 10’category were Ocean Carr – 1st; Spencer Nero – 2nd, and Vaughn Leslie and Oret Ollivierre jointly placing 3rd. In the ‘11 – 15’ category, Isabel Clouden, Curtlan Bunyan and Ridge Leslie took first, second and third spots, respectively. In the ‘16 and over’ category, first place was taken by Bradson Snagg, Wayne King – 2nd, and A. Gooding – 3rd.

The Youngest Flyer prize was awarded to Cruz Davis; Oldest Flyer went to Wayne King, and Best Female Flyer – Melissa Alexander. The Largest and Smallest Kite awards went to Kliff Leslie and Kieton Grant, respectively. The Richards family won Most Family Members, while Cody Leslie walked off with Most Patriotic Kite and Curtlan Bunyan received Most Original Kite. The grand prize went Bradson Snagg, who won King of the Park.

At Argyle, the winners were: Kristoffe Mascoll, Omar King and J’vonte Creese won first, second and third, respectively, in the Under 10 category; Ronald Trent, Tessa John and Kamara Henry placed first, second and third, respectively, in the ‘11 – 15’ category; and Vic Dalzine, Laura Dalzine and Livingston Rogers scooped the top 3 awards in the ‘16 and over’ category, respectively.

Youngest Flyer was awarded to Zeon Williams; Oldest Flyer – Kingsley Davis; Best Female Flyer – Tessa John; Smallest Kite – Jomol Lewis; Most Patriotic Kite – Laura Dalzine; Most Family Members – the Lovelace family, and Most Original Kite – Edward Smith. The top prize, King of the Hill, was won by Vic Dalzine, who received, among other great prizes, a trip for two to any LIAT destination.

Marketing Manager Justin John profusely thanked all this year’s sponsors, which included Fruta, Red Bull, Premier Distributors and the Embassy of China on Taiwan. “These sponsors have added to the quality of the kite flying event!” He also thanked long-standing judges Tyrone Davis, Ron Hull, Ken Hull and Leon Ambris.

Moreover, John was grateful to those who attended and encouraged those who hadn’t to patronise the event next year. “We look forward to your continued support of this cultural venture, which is aimed at reviving this popular pass-time in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. For those who were unable to make it this year, mark March/April 2010 to be present at this ever growing event!”(JSV)
