Children of Canouan celebrate gift of Reading

The children of Canouan celebrated Literacy week from March 9 to 16. Reading competitions, recitation of poems, setting up of bulletin boards, a Library day, hat decorating, exhibitions, spelling bee competition and a hats parade, marked the week.{{more}}

The week-long programme was organised by the Canouan Government School and CCA Limited. The Canouan Island Council sponsored the spelling bee trophies, Save the Children Trust Fund sponsored the Literacy Banner, and Club Nuevo provided special T-Shirts for the teachers. Residents and visitors on Canouan served as volunteers for the various activities.

The Spelling Bee competition, which was one of the major highlights of the Literacy activities, featured students from Kindergarten to Grade Six of the Canouan Government School and the Pelican School competing for Spelling Bee Titles. Students, staff and parents alike greatly enjoyed the competition and have asked for the two schools to continue to participate in such activities.

On March 16, Curriculum Support Officer in the Ministry of Education Carol Ross attended the final event of the week, namely the hats parade, along the main road of the island. In her address to the students, Ross encouraged the children to continue to develop their reading skills, reminding them that they would be the nation’s future leaders. She also commended the organizers for a successful week of Literacy activities and thanked parents, community members and visitors for all the support and assistance they had given.
