SVGCC hosts Miss Heritage Show

Five participants from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) are set to vie for the accolade of Miss Heritage 2009 on Saturday, March 14th, at Club 40/40 (formerly Marcomay).{{more}}

This being the SVGCC Heritage Club’s first event of this nature, the proceeds will be donated to kidney patient Rodney King, a student of the SVGCC, who is in dire need of a transplant.

The contestants are Ashée Dalrymple, Austinsha Solomon, Ronika Medford, Shanice Thompson and Shavsha Speedwell. They will compete in the following categories: Ambassadorial Speech – 3 minute speech on a nation builder of contestant’s choice, Talent, Cultural Wear – a dress depicting something of historical significance, and Interview – questions on current affairs and autobiography.

Heritage Club Public Relations Officer Kimeisha Bailey explained that the group took the initiative because there is no other show of that nature and it feels, “There is a lot of talent at the college and little outlet for displaying it.” Bailey added, “As the heritage club, we always aim to educate our community about our history. On the night of the show, people should leave knowing more about our heritage and especially our local heroes.”

She further thanked all those who have sponsored the show, and urged patrons to attend the event because the money that is raised will go towards a worthy cause.

Sixteen-year-old Rodney King suffers from Chronic Kidney Failure and is set to receive a kidney from his father, construction worker Eric James. However, the operation will cost approximately $150,000. An appeal was launched in January 2009 for members of the public to come forward and assist financially.

The Miss Heritage Show, which is scheduled to become an annual event, will commence at 7pm. Tickets, which are available from Heritage Club members, cost $15 – more at the door. (JSV)
