ST. JOHN’S – Regional carrier LIAT has teamed up with the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) to spur travel into Barbados for cricket with a US$1 each way fare.{{more}}

The enticing fare will allow travellers from seven Caribbean territories to see cricket live for a total return fare of just US$2 plus applicable taxes.

The “$1 Cricket Party” promotion was launched first on the new LIAT website (www.liat.com) at midnight Sunday, February 15, 2009.

LIAT’s Chief Commercial Officer, Leesa Parris-Rudder, said the initiative was just one way in which the carrier was making travel more attractive to the consumers, given the current economic downturn.

“LIAT remains committed to offering regional travellers opportunities to experience our 21 destinations. We are constantly seeking to make our fares more competitive and continue to find innovative ways to increase the overall value of travel to our customers,” Parris-Rudder said.

The Chief Commercial Officer for LIAT noted: “We saw the $1 Cricket Party promotion as a wonderful opportunity to encourage travel to Barbados with the BTA, while assisting West Indies cricket fans in maintaining their support for our home team”.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer for the Barbados Tourism Authority, Stuart Layne, said that the promotion was part of a year-long plan to provide incentives for travellers to visit the island.

“Barbados has a wide variety of cultural events and attractions to see,” Stuart commented. “This month, England’s tour of the West Indies touches down in Barbados to the delight of West Indies cricket fans. The $1 Cricket Party was conceptualised to give fans the opportunity to follow the West Indies to Barbados at a very attractive price. In addition, travellers are also given the opportunity to win free entry to the match at Kensington Oval,” he said.

The promotion, the like of which has never been done before in the region, is available from territories Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Trinidad. The offer is scheduled to end today, February 20, 2009, or while seats are available.

The Barbados leg of England’s cricket tour will be from February 26 – March 2.
