Carlyle Collis, a labourer, of Walvaroo, appeared before Senior Magistrate Donald Browne on Tuesday at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court to answer the indictable charge.

He was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison and the matter was adjourned to April 14, 2009, for a Preliminary Inquiry.

It is alleged that Collis broke into his mother’s house on Christmas Eve and demanded a cutlass from her. The elder Collis, a housewife, who is said to have been wheelchair bound, allegedly refused to comply to his demands and was slapped and beaten about her body.

It is reported that neighbours heard the commotion and rushed to Bertha Collis’ rescue. She was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries on Christmas Day.

Reports further indicate that Carlyle has a mental history and was a patient at the Mental Health Centre in the past. (KW)
