GHS wins top prizes in essay competition

The Girls’ High School (GHS) has set a record for itself. At a presentation ceremony held at the GHS on Monday, November 17, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) representative Elritha Dick announced that two students from the school were the winners of the second and third prizes in a recent Organisation of the Eastern Caribbean

States (OECS) Essay Competition.{{more}}

Fifteen-year-old Tonya Pompey won the 2nd prize of EC$2,500, and expressed that the award had been totally unexpected. “I was surprised!” she chuckled. Daughter of Godfred and Miriam Pompey, Tonya shared that she plans to invest the money in her university fund. She also hopes to pursue a path in Accounting.

Third place winner Jasmine Gould-Hull was pleased to receive her cheque for $2,000. The 15-year-old plans to save the money to pay for her college fees, and is interested in studying Accounting or an Information Technology (IT) related subject. Jasmine, daughter of Silma Gould, relayed that she had never expected to place in the top 3. “I was surprised because I’ve never won anything like this before.”

GHS Headmistress Andrea Bowman stated how pleased she is with her students’ performance. Furthermore, she expressed her gratitude for the $2,500 award that the GHS received for taking two top prizes. ECCB Representative Elritha Dick mentioned that she hopes GHS takes the 1st prize next year, as well as the prize for submitting the most entries. “I’m very proud; not only as a Vincentian but also as a past student!” she exclaimed.

Organised by the ECCB each year, the essay competition was open to all students in OECS countries aged 14 – 19 years old. The topic set was: ‘The OECS Economic Union – a viable option for member countries?’ (JSV)
