Convict: Lawyers plotted against me
Convicted murderer Shorn Samuel has accused Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Colin Williams and defence attorney Stephen Williams of plotting against him in the murder case of Stacey Wilson.{{more}}
Samuel, a resident of Vermont, was convicted on Wednesday at the High Court for the murder of 21-year-old Wilson of Vermont on December 11, 2006, at the Leeward Bus Terminal.
In the absence of the jury, Samuel said that he heard the prosecutor and attorney talking about the death penalty and they were working hand in hand. âI canât let Stephen Williams defend me. I just canât do that,â Samuel repeatedly stated.
In a loud voice, Samuel said that he wanted attorney Vynette Frederick to do his case, but she was out of the country at time. âI have my own people. I can organize for myself, but Iâm not getting my phone call,â Samuel said. Samuel told the court that parts of the depositions were torn and that he needed a new one but never received it.
In his defence, DPP Williams said that he and Williams (Stephen) are not related in any way and that attorney Williams had asked him for a copy of the depositions mentioned by Samuel.
Stephen Williams told the court that it was not until Friday, October 10th, 2008, that he received a call from the Registry stating that he was made legal counsel for Samuel.
Presiding over the matter, Justice Frederick Bruce-Lyle told Samuel that he had to accept Williams as his attorney since the state had provided him.
Samuel said he wanted an injunction to the media because of the publicity of his case and that his life was under threat. As the jury was being formed, Samuel challenged persons with the surname Jack and Williams from sitting on his case. âYou people donât understand my psychology. You grudge me because I have my own language and you donât even know when the grand jury was abolished,â Samuel shouted. (KW)
