Hosted on the island of St. Thomas, Karen will participate in activities from October 7th – 12th. The main fashion show will take place on October 11 – also the young designer’s birthday – where she will present her African/French influenced haute couture collection. Karen will also be showcasing a swimwear collection; this being her first time doing so.

Karen related that her approach to fashion leans more on the philosophical side. “Each one of us has a role to play in life – mine being that of a designer. I plan to make an impact on our perception of ourselves, and that of others, through the media of clothing,” she affirmed.

Although excited at the prospect of attending the fashion week, Karen found the preparation for the event quite challenging. She explained that it had been difficult finding the fabric that she wanted and finding persons who had time to assist her with sewing the outfits.

The young designer was full of praise and gratitude for all those who have aided her. “…thanks to all who have helped me. I’m very grateful!” she gushed. Karen was especially thankful to her mother, Peggy DeFreitas, who wholeheartedly supports her participation in the event.(JSV)
