Rotaract gets cheque

A cheque valued at $11,800 was handed over to the Rotaract Club of Kingstown by a representative of Corea’s Food Division last Tuesday.{{more}}

The funds are for the sponsorship of the Halib Orange Rotaract Spelling Bee competition. The competition, which is in its eleventh year, will see students square off from October 8 to 21at the preliminary round. The winners from that round will then go on to the Finals scheduled for November 1.

The winner will represent St Vincent and the Grenadines at a regional spelling bee to be held in Grenada.

Sales and Marketing Manager Coleen Phillips said her company is pleased to be a major sponsor of the competition this year. She declared that our children are the future and this is their way “of encouraging and supporting our young people to get an education and excel in their school work”.

Meanwhile President of Rotaract Club of Kingstown Shevon Smith stated that this year’s competition is more exciting than previous ones because of the attractive prices that will be offered. The first place winner and the school they represent will both receive computers. The second place winner will receive $500 and third $300. Smith said her club is very proud to accept the sponsorship.

Courts St Vincent Limited is also a sponsor of the competition to the tune of $3,000. Courts Marketing Executive Alexis Harry-John told Searchlight: “Improving the level of literacy at all levels of the education system has been a major focus in our sponsorship guidelines, and we are extremely delighted to be partnering with Seven Seas and the Rotaract Club of Kingstown on such a very timely and important initiative”. Courts has also donated a computer desk and an HP All-In-One printer for the winning student. (VM)
