Wiretapping could cause serious ramifications, says Reverend Job

Superintendent Minister of the Methodist Church Reverend Victor Job has stated that there will be serious ramifications if wiretapping becomes a reality here in St Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}

“The thought is noble, but what happens if a police is dishonest and abuses the system and listens into the conversations of citizens and even in the offices of Lawyers?” he asked.

Job was at the time responding to a call made by Deputy Commissioner of Police Bertie Pompey to have wiretapping on the Law books. Pompey had said that the security landscape has changed, and as the face of crime changes, new methods must be looked at.

Speaking at the ecumenical service to mark the opening of the new Law year on Monday, the Methodist minister stated that within recent times questions have been raised about the dispensation of justice and those who administer it. “Should we institute laws to allow the police to have a free hand to tap into our conversations as citizens?” Job asked.

Job noted that the end result of apprehending persons that may be suspects of illegal activities is something that everyone would look forward to but noted that there is also the risk of something bad happening. “We should be careful that we don’t create a monster that we can’t control and that could come back and haunt us at sometime later.” He stated.
