At a press conference on Wednesday, 10 September, teacher at the KPS Susan Jackson divulged the list of scheduled events. There will be a mini exhibition on September 22nd, where five of the first students to attend the KPS will visit the school, speak of their experiences and showcase photographs and other such mementos from the early days. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on November 5th at the Victoria Park, preceded by a march from the school. The annual school fair will be held on December 6th and presented as the 60th Anniversary Fair, and lastly, but not least, during the Easter season there will be a KPS Family Fun Day to be held at the Grammar School Playing Field.
Past student Kathleen Huggins had been one of the first students to enrol at the KPS on September 20th, 1948. She recalled that there had been 25 students – 14 girls and 11 boys. Their parents had to pay a fee of $6 per term. In her remarks, Huggins wished the school all the best. âMay it grow from strength to strength in learning, knowledge and wisdom…â she declared.
Also present were Public Relations Officer of the Organising Committee Johnny Straker and retired Headteacher Emily Providence.
Past and present students, as well as well-wishers, are being encouraged to participate in the events, especially the Service of Thanksgiving. KPS memorabilia are available for purchase from the school. Parent Teacher Association President Joel Poyer announced that the newly launched KPS Alumni Association is developing a website to keep past students in contact wherever they may be across the globe.(JSV)
