Baptiste was named to that position at a regional consultation of these organizations, held at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago.

The groups, which included The Institute of International Relations, of the University of the West Indies, The Caribbean Association for Feminists Research and Action, The International Federation of Coalitions for Cultural Diversity and the Canadian Coalition for Cultural Diversity, had met in August to discuss a number of issues concerning cultural policies and development.

Baptiste has been mandated to meet with the various groups, following which she is expected to create programmes and chart the course for advocacy on matters relating to culture in the region, and its contribution to social cohesion.

She is also mandated to raise awareness of the value of creativity and cultural sectors, including music, art, craft, drama, dance, literature, fashion and folk expressions, moving towards a historic approach for the development of culture in the Caribbean.(JJ)
