Women being trained in self defence

As women live in fear of the suspected serial rapist that is on the loose, one martial arts club is seeking to empower them.{{more}}

The three-year-old Redemption School of Martial Arts is presenting a five-week long self defence class for women.

“We want women to have an idea how to defend themselves,” said President of the club, Kwesi Cato.

“We want them to know that they do not have to live in fear,” Cato added.

The classes will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 4:35pm- 5:35pm at the Kingstown Multi Purpose Centre, at a cost of $10.

Classes will consist of basic self defense drills and tactics.

Cato told SEARCHLIGHT that the classes are not intended to suggest that women seek to confront a would-be attacker in all circumstances.

He noted that women will still have to assess for themselves when defending themselves is an option and when it is best.

“If you can escape your attacker without engaging them, that is always best,” Cato said.

Police are continuing their hunt for the man they believe is responsible for over 20 incidents of rape and/or sexual assaults in the Arnos Vale/ Glen/ Fountain/ Fairhall/ Villa/ Calliaqua areas over the last few months.(KJ)
