The project, situated at the Diamond Beach, is expected to replace the old process of sewerage waste disposal, which has been taking place over the years.
Raw sewerage will be brought to the site from across the country, treated and tested, before being released into the environment.
Estimated to cost about EC $1.2 million, the project, which sits on just over two acres of land and started in July 2007, is expected to be completed at the end of September.
According to Chief Engineer of the project Kenyatta Alleyne, raw sewerage collected at the site will go through a number of stages before being released into the environment.
It will first enter one of two anaerobic ponds where it will be retained and treated before entering the second facultative pond for further treatment.
The third stage – the maturation bond, will see the waste undergoing further treatment and testing; which includes the addition of chlorine, before being released.
Alleyne assured those gathered at the site that the project is not only environmentally sound, but also a better way to dispose of septic waste.(JJ)
