For those who thought that talk of a Wellness Revolution was just that-talk, they are wrong.
Minister of Health Dr Douglas Slater has made it clear that the wellness revolution is going to be ongoing and not just be a flash in pan programme.{{more}}
Last Wednesday, journalists were summoned to the Ministry of Health conference room, where Dr Slater, along with Director of Sports Nelson Hillocks and Chief Health Educator, Patsy Wyllie announced the week of activities that will officially launch the Wellness Revolution in this country.
It all kicks off on September 13, which is CARICOM Wellness day, with a massive fun day starting at 9am at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex.
Similar to what was done during the Cricket World Cup last year, some areas leading to the Complex will be closed off so vehicles will not be allowed; persons will have to park and walk.
Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves will deliver the feature address during the official ceremony which is scheduled to begin at 4pm.
The official ceremony will also include cultural presentations and exercise demonstrations, among other things.
Persons attending the launch have been advised to come prepared for sporting activities, including walking and riding.
Sunday, September 14, is the date for the official church service, while on Monday 15th, a health fair will be held at the Peace Memorial Hall, while decentralized fairs will be held at various venues throughout the country on Tuesday 16th.
Wednesday 17th will see public servants come together for a sports day at Victoria Park, and Thursday 18th and Friday 19th will feature a symposium at the Methodist Church Hall and a schoolsâ festival, respectively.
The Wellness Revolution is a CARICOM initiative that was birthed during a heads of government meeting in Trinidad in September 2007.
The CARICOM leaders voiced concerns about the burden resulting from the morbidity and mortality caused by Chronic Non Communicable diseases in the region and stressed the need for an aggressive move towards healthier lifestyles.
The phrase âWellness Revolutionâ was coined by Dr Gonsalves, and he had announced his intention to take measures that will assist in the drive, including raising the prices of unhealthy foods and drinks, while taking steps to make fruits and vegetables cheaper.(KJ)
