Bishop’s Tshanna relieved after a year of hard work

Acting principal of the Bishop’s College Kingstown, Cecelia King, is crediting the performance of the teachers and students of the school for their fifth place in this year’s CSEC examination.{{more}}

King told SEARCHLIGHT that considering that this year was the first year of graduation of the “education revolution” students, the school’s 67.7 per cent pass rate, though slightly down from last year, was satisfactory.

In 2003, government implemented a policy that saw each 12-year-old given a secondary school place, regardless of their performance in the Common Entrance Examination.

“We had to take some children who were below average. We really had to go the extra mile, and we had to be drawing from each other,” King told SEARCHLIGHT.

King said that she was particularly pleased to see the great improvement in the school’s Mathematics pass rate.

The pass rate for Mathematics jumped from 21 per cent in 2007 to over 60 per cent.

Results in Human and Social Biology also stood out; moving from 63 percent last year to 82.4 percent this year.

Leading the way for the school was Tshanna Hoyte, who got eight subjects, including 3 ones, 4 twos, and 1 three. The top male performer was Aaron Williams who got six subjects with 4 twos and 2 threes.

“I am happy and relieved…I worked hard,’ said 17-year-old Tshanna.

The Kingstown Park resident is looking forward to owning a business one day.

Business is also on the mind of Aaron, who told SEARCHLIGHT that eventually he wants to be involved in his family’s business.

“I am relieved, after a year of hard work. I am proud of myself,’ said the 17-year-old Casson Hill resident.

King told SEARCHLIGHT that despite the encouraging performance, she and her staff with be going through the results with a fine tooth comb to ascertain the areas that must be singled out for improvement. (KJ)
