A small gathering of JCI members and wellwishers were present at Murray Heights hotel to recognize Bernard BT Marksman, Alice Mandeville and Kenrick Murray on Tuesday, August 19.

Bernard Marksman was awarded for his contribution in national security, humanitarianism and Junior Chamber Movement, while Alice Mandeville, who was unable to be present at the ceremony, was awarded for her contribution in industrial relations, politics and religion and Junior Chamber movement. Kenrick Murray was awarded for his contribution in Travel Service industry, community service, the blind reading system Braille and the Junior Chamber movement. The trio have been part of the organization for over thirty years.

Former JCI President Monty Maule, while delivering the feature address, expressed a wished that some persons who hold positions in public office today had been exposed to the JCI experience at some point in time. He felt that this should be so because of the quality of work they produce.

He said the organization is a “demonstration of democracy in its purest form”. He further stated that not even the church practices the “principles of democracy like in the JCI movement”.

Maule, who has been a member of the organization for 31 years, mentioned that it was through the organization that he was able to truly discover himself. He also noted that some of his best days were spent in the Jaycees. He expressed the opinion that the organization teaches persons how to be generally supportive of others and the importance of striving for excellence, among other things, including, how to respect the views and opinions of others. Maule pointed out that JCI is still the “greatest young people organization in the world” and congratulated them for recognizing the contribution made by the awardees.

Maule, who holds the position of Senator in the organization, urged the present members to continue striving for excellence and great achievements. (VM)
