NLA sports club donates to children in need

Last Friday, the National Lotteries Authority’s (NLA) sports club, “A Lot O Fun Club’, handed over school supplies, including shoes, uniforms and books to three school children in need at a brief ceremony held at the NLA’s headquarters.

It was there that Education Officer Carlton Hall, who was there on other business, said that he couldn’t resist commenting on the gesture by the two-year-old club.

“This is touching. I want to congratulate the Lotto sports club. Many children don’t do well in school because they lack this type of support,” Hall said.

He challenged the club to increase their generosity and to aim towards giving full secondary school scholarships to one or two students in time to come.

Hall also used the opportunity to lash out at fathers who do not take care of their children. He said this neglect puts many children at a disadvantage in their schooling, making contributions from organization like the Lotto Sports Club crucial.

President of the club, Carlos John, said that the club was formed to engender a spirit of unity among the workers and encourage socialization outside of working hours.

John said that they have been raising funds for the club’s activities, and when the opportunity came about to help some children in need, they decided to take advantage of it so as to make a difference in their own small way.

Godwin May, of Sandy Bay, Jahmer John, of Georgetown, both 11 years old, along with Ronicia Veira, of Richmond Hill, were the beneficiaries of the Lotto club’s kindness.

Avelma Deane, May’s mother, told SEARCHLIGHT that she is very grateful.

“It mean a lot to me because things kinda tough for us,” she said.

May is a first form student at the North Union Secondary School, while John and Veira are in the first form at the St. Vincent Grammar School and grade four the St Mary’s RC school, respectively.(KJ)
