Ministry to resuscitate livestock industry
From August 17th â September 13th livestock farmers and their operations will be given added attention as the Ministry of Agriculture takes an entire month to recognize the important contribution this sector makes to economic growth and food security here.{{more}}
Under the theme âPartnering Livestock and Agro Industry for Sustainable Food Securityâ and the slogan âProviding the MEAT of the matter!â the Ministry of Agriculture, through its Animal Health and Production Division (AHPD) will highlight the important developments that took place in this sector in recent times.
According to Dr. Kathian Hackshaw, Chief Veterinary Officer, attempts will be made to highlight important achievements such as the expanding role of the local Hatchery at Dumbarton in the supply of day old chicks to poultry farmers and its involvement in ensuring SVG remains self sufficient in egg production. To this end a documentary on activities at the Hatchery will be shown to the general public. A series of other activities have also been earmarked such as Competitions for the best farm and best farm animals; Seminars and training sessions in specialize meat cut; An Animal Disease Surveillance already in progress (4th â 22nd August); Open days at the Livestock stations for farmers and other institutions, and A School quiz
The month will be officially declared with a Radio Address by the Hon. Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Montgomery Daniel and an interactive radio program on HITZ FM on Sunday 17th to discuss issues affecting the Livestock Industry and other developments in the sector. In addition, a series of informative radio programs will be aired on the daily Farmers Diary program by the Animal Health and Production Officers.
Dr. Hackshaw has also confirmed that the winning animal in the livestock competitions will be displayed at the site of the National Agricultural and Agro-based Industrial Exhibition in October this year.
