Credit Union awards scholarships

The thirtieth anniversary of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers Credit Union proved to be a special time not only for the union members but also their children who received vouchers, bursaries and scholarships at an awards ceremony, which also saw the launching of the annual essay competition.{{more}}

As part of its 30th anniversary, the credit union decided to award one extra student with a scholarship, and also increased the amount granted annually from $750 to $1000.

46 students were also awarded book vouchers at the ceremony, which took place on Friday August 8th at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown.Tuesday’s ceremony was the first of three events at which the union intends to award students: later this month, students who recently completed their CXC/GCE examinations and would be entering the St. Vincent Community College will receive scholarships.

Later this year, bursaries will also be given to students moving on to tertiary institutions.

This year, Jamarl Alexander and Tessa John were the awardees who received the union’s annual secondary school scholarship, with Shannique Noel awarded the SVUT Credit Union 30th anniversary scholarship.

Meanwhile, primary and secondary school students will compete in the annual essay competition.

In announcing the competition, event chairman Dwight Lewis that the competition will be open to grade six primary schools students and secondary school students in fifth form.

The winners of this years essay competition titled “The Value of Credit Unions” will receive $500 for second prize and $1000 for placing first in both categories.

Lewis indicated that the union is hoping that the competition will become a school based one, with the best essays from each school being presented for judging.

The competition was officially launched by credit union president Curtis King and is expected to run until the end of the first term. (JJ)
