Garifuna to be part of SVG homecoming 2009

A Garifuna contingent will be part of the Vincy homecoming 2009 celebrations.{{more}}
According to a release from the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit, this will be done in an effort to maintain links with St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as it is regarded as the ancestral homeland of the Garifuna people.
In addition to 2009 being the 30th anniversary of St. Vincent and the Grenadinesâ Independence, it is also the 212th anniversary of the exile of the Garifuna people to Central America.
The reunion is also expected to foster a greater link between Garifuna in the Diaspora and those in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The initiative was made by the Garifuna Coalition in the United States at the invitation of the Consul General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in New York, Cosmus Cozier.
