The workshop, which began on Monday, saw some twenty-four participants from different Health institutions in the country, including the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, the Lewis Punett Home, the Mental Health Institution, Vet Control and Community Health Centres. There was also participation from the Ministry of Health & the Environment, as well as the Public Health Department. Various sections of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital were also represented – including the Maternity Ward, Surgical Wards, Accident & Emergency, Paediatrics and Operating Theatre. Health Care Workers attending the workshop included persons with as many as 28 years experience in the field and as young as 5 years in the sector.

This workshop, which is a continuation of Human Resources Development Workshops being hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, has as its objective: “to seek to create within each participant a thorough understanding of the need for going beyond providing quality technical service to those whom they serve”.

Facilitator Vera-Ann Brereton explained that it is important for health care providers to appreciate that “quality care is more than excellent technical care. Good health care can only be delivered when we treat every client or patient as a person, not just some disease or complaint or injury”.

Topics covered during the 3-day workshop included: How to avoid stress and burnout; Barriers that inhibit problem solving; How to listen with an open mind; Handling difficult situations.
