They were introduced to the creative process, personal symbolism, colour theory and portrait drawing. The teachers were being trained to teach children at the Youlou Art Foundation summer program which began on Tuesday, July 15.
The summer art program will be held for two weeks at the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, the Georgetown Govât School and Barrouallie Community Centre under the theme âGrowing young SVG artistsâ. The programme caters for children between five and fifteen years old.
Conducting the sessions was Dominican Republic American Artist and Educator Jose Ortiz who said that the teachers were receptive to the art lessons presented to them. Ortiz noted that he has seen the confidence level of the teachers grow since the workshop began. He said he was excited about the enthusiasm shown by them and was confident that they were going to do a really good job with the children.
Ortiz, who has been drawing since the age of 14, said that art can help to develop childrenâs confidence because they are engaging in the creative process, which he believes is important because it helps them find out about themselves.(VM)
