The Searchlight Social Club, formed five weeks ago by core members of the Searchlight newspaper staff, will hold its first public event, a barbeque, tomorrow, Saturday, May 3rd, at the Heritage Square in Kingstown.
The event takes place at the official launch of Vincy Mas 2008.
According to President of the SSC Junior Jarvis, the event was scheduled to take place at the Searchlight car park on that day, but changes were made to prevent a clash with the heralding of this countryâs premier cultural event.
âIn keeping with what we are trying to accomplish, it was wise not to change the date of our first event, but to incorporate with the Carnival Development Corporation by holding the event at Heritage Square.â
Jarvis indicated that a follow up barbecue, along with a car wash, will take place next Saturday, May 10th, at the newspaperâs car park at Paulâs Avenue instead.
Persons purchasing tickets for both events will receive a discount on the prices.
Both events are intended to be the first of many worthy causes that the club intends to undertake.
âProceeds from this event will go towards the well being of a number of persons who have come to our attention.â Jarvis said.
âWe intend to set up a scholarship fund for nine-year-old Kimberly Shallow whose life was changed when she and her sister Rosanna were shot by their father in Sandy Bay in May last year. Unfortunately, her sister did not survive.â
âEight year old Junior Smart was featured on the March 7th edition of our newspaper, the youngster who dashed from the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital when a bomb threat was called in, just as he was about to have tonsillitis surgery….
âFurther investigations revealed that Junior and his family are in need of assistance and we decided to step up,â Jarvis said.
The SSC, along with other media houses, also took part in a friendly swim meet organized by the Taiwanese Ambassador Jack Cheng.
The event took place last Saturday.
