President of CTAWU suffers mild stroke

President of the Commercial Technical and Allied Workers’ Union (CTAWU) Alice Mandeville has been hospitalized.{{more}}

The Union boss was admitted to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital on Monday morning, having suffered a mild stroke which affected movement on her right side, as well as her speech, Searchlight has learnt.

General Secretary of the Union Lloyd Small told Searchlight on Wednesday that an emergency meeting of the Union’s executive has been called for Monday, January 14, to discuss the situation, but under the Union’s Constitution, once the president is unable to function, the 1st Vice President, a position held by Louise Glasgow, acts in the capacity of president.

Mandeville has been president of this country’s largest trade union since 1982. She is also the Deputy Chairman of the National Broadcasting Corporation, and a Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senator.

At press time on Wednesday, Mandeville was said to be showing signs of improvement.
