Karate kicking up a storm in Bequia

The Kiai Karate Club #2 of Bequia joined in the 2007 Nine Mornings celebrations by playing host to two karate clubs from mainland St. Vincent recently.

The Kiai club, which boasts thirty members, was set up just over a year ago by Instructor Selwyn Gibson, who holds a 3rd degree Black Belt in Karate. Gibson was given assistance by the Bequia Rotary Club which provided a training site (Dojo). {{more}}The membership includes men, women, children as young as eight years, as well as a proud 60-year-old grandmother.

Dojo Club” from mainland St Vincent journeyed to Bequia for a weekend camp. Training sessions were conducted by Senseis Selwyn Gibson and Ivo Providence, a 4th Degree Black Belt. Athletes were introduced to beach training as well as tournament requirements.

The camp climaxed with a mini tournament in which the Kiai Club No 1 was the overall winner, and the Kiai Club No 2 of Bequia taking the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the junior team Kata. Seventeen-year-old Selreen Gibson, a 1st Degree Black Belt from the Kiai Club No 1 won the senior Kata Competition.
