Roland Bowman aims to top charts

With his song being labeled the 2007 Christmas road march, parang soca singer Roland Bowman seems headed for his third title of the Best New Christmas song.{{more}}

According to Bowman, who dropped by Searchlight’s offices on Tuesday, his most recent effort “Christmas Party” is doing well and may take him to the top of the charts.

“The song is doing very well. It’s getting lots of airplay and I am confident that it will be the best this year.”

Bowman, 43, is competing against some more seasoned singers like Carlton ‘CP’ Hall, Sulle, Bomani, Skarpyon, and Tally and Elvis for the top spot, which he won in 2004 and 2006.

He placed second in 2005.

The VINLEC employee of 22 years also sings with his workplace choir, which placed second at this year’s National Broadcasting Corporation carolling competition two weeks ago.

He is also set to perform at the National Carolling Competition tonight at Victoria Park.

Bowman credits his love for parang music, and music on a whole, to his father, the late George Bowman, his mother Jeannine, and his other family members.

“My father played every musical instrument you could think of, and my mother was quite inspirational too.”

“My brothers (Lennox, Ricky, Dennis) and I also have a band.”

The band, which also includes his daughter Sade and niece Michaela, has an 18-song album, which is due out next year. His six-year-old son Saeed is also featured in the intro to this year’s effort.

Bowman said that he is using this year’s Nine Mornings to take part in the various community events and perform his song, much to the delight of fans.

He also hinted that next Carnival he may be taking part in the calypso competition. (JJ)
