20 get National Youth Awards

Twenty individuals and groups have received awards from the Youth Affairs Department in the annual “National Youth Awards”.{{more}}

The ceremony, which was held last week Wednesday at the Cruise Ship Terminal, heard addresses from Youth Minister Glen Beache, Youth Officer Carlos Williams, CARICOM Youth Ambassador Altocha Anderson, Commonwealth Youth Caucus Rep. Shenica Haynes. The feature address was given by Peace Corps Director Cuthbert James.

Six persons were nominated by the Ministry of Education: Chivambo Utamu Rose – Top Male Performer at Common Entrance Exams; Lafeisha Hadley – Top Female Performer at Common Entrance Exams; Leon M. Walters – Top Male Performer at CSEC Exams; Collette Sharlene Charles – Top Female Performer at CSEC Exams; Jomokie Phillips – Top Male Performer at A’level Exams; Raquel Frederick – Top Female Performer at A’level Exams.

For outstanding achievements in music – Jomoro Francis, nominated by CDC; for outstanding achievements in song – Rose-Ann Richardson, nominated by Department of Culture; for outstanding achievements in Dance – Renaissance Dancers, nominated by Department of Culture; for outstanding achievements in Drama – Rodney Small, nominated by Department of Culture; for outstanding achievements in Tourism – Vadeesha John & Jo-Ann Marshall, nominated by the Ministry of Tourism; for outstanding achievements in Lawn Tennis – Fabrice George, nominated by SVGLTA; for outstanding achievements in Table Tennis – Dominic Evans, nominated by SVGTTA; for outstanding achievements in Cycling – Marlon Antrobus, nominated by SVGCU; for outstanding achievements in Netball – Saska Diamond, nominated by SVGNA; for outstanding achievements in School for Children with Special Needs – Greg Stay, nominated by the school; for outstanding achievements for person living with disability – Esroy Hackshaw, nominated by the National Society of persons with Disability; for outstanding Adult contribution to Youth Development – Veolant Cupid, nominated by Peace Corps; Community Group of the Year – MPESCO, Mt. Pleasant Education Sports and Cultural Organisation, nominated by Peace Corps.

Certificates of recognition were given to some Business Enterprises that have assisted the Department in its Outreach programming area.

Last week’s activity brought to an end a month of activities held by the Department to celebrate National Youth Month 2007.
