Local FirstCaribbean to unveil Unsung Hero
The local branch of FirstCaribbean International will announce the 2007 Unsung Hero this evening.
First introduced in 2003, the FirstCaribbean Unsung Heroes programme has become the flagship for volunteerism in the region. {{more}} The programme seeks to recognize and honour those people who have contributed selflessly to the development of their various communities with little or no reward. According to FirstCaribbean, since the programmeâs inception, the diversity and caliber of nominees continue to improve.
The programme is conducted on two levels, nationally and regionally. All seventeen countries in which First Caribbean operates hold a local event at which candidates are nominated and a winner selected. The local winner is then entered into the regional competition. This year, St. Vincent and the Grenadines had eight entries, and the local committee met recently to choose the winner.
The name of this yearâs winner will be announced at a special ceremony this Friday evening at the Grenadine Hotel. He or she will be presented with a cheque for seven thousand five hundred US dollars, as well as other tokens from the bank. The proceeds of the cheque will go towards the winnerâs favourite cause.
Last yearâs winner was Jestina Charles, who eventually went on to become the regional Unsung Hero. First Caribbean believes that this yearâs local hero also stands an excellent chance of becoming the 2007 regional Unsung Hero.
