Despite being in obvious pain and finding it difficult to move around, Grant, with a smile on her face, expressed profound gratitude to the board members and the many members who made contributions to ensure that she could get the help she needed.
Her niece, Arlene Grant, who was also present at the handing over ceremony, admitted that as a member of GECCU she was not pleased initially when the financial organisation began withdrawing the $20 annual contribution for the Social Fund. She said that her feeling of resentment has certainly changed after she realized that not only was her money genuinely assisting those in need, but her own aunt is the very first recipient.
Chairperson of the Social Development Fund Michael Da Silva said that the monetary donation made to Grant, which was witnessed by other members in the GECCU building, was a manifestation of what the fund aimed to achieve since it was established in 2005.
He said that the Social Fund committee screens all applicants, from which they choose the most deserving person. He said they knew Grant was the one most in need.
GECUU Accountant Maxine Richards said while the Social Fund was not there to replace medical insurance, the money would assist Grant in getting an MRI scan and other consultations. Richards also praised Grant for being a loyal member of GECCU who made sacrifices to save despite her low income.
GECCU Director Elliot Burgin also thanked all members for making the difference in the lives of others through the Social Fund and prayed for Grantâs mobility to be restored. (SG)
