Arnos Vale takes beating in ‘Head’
The Great Head Bay, popularly known as the Arnos Vale Beach, âtook a beatingâ on Saturday, September 15, 2007, as our Nation joined the rest of the world to celebrate âInternational Coastal Clean-up Dayâ through a National Clean-up Campaign.{{more}}
The Arnos Vale Educational Sports and Cultural Organisation (AVESCO) played the lead role as coordinator of the Arnos Vale leg of this National effort.
They drew support from the residents of Upper Cane Hall, including the Upper Cane Hall Literary Group, the Youth Groups from The Hope for Life Restoration Ministries, Arnos Vale Methodist Church and the Arnos Vale Calvary Baptist Church, members of the Area Councils C, D, E+H, as well as students from the Community College residing in the area, along with other residents of Arnos Vale and the surrounding Communities in the campaign.
Together, these groups joined forces to beat the garbage and unwanted material on part of the Arnos Vale River and the Great Head Bay into submission.
Tons of garbage, enough to fill eight garbage skips, were collected and either burnt or packaged for disposal by the Solid Waste Unit from the beach alone.
Sticks, logs, aerosol tins, plastic bottles, coconut shells, styrofoam containers, wire, housing material, shoes and clothing formed the bulk of items on the list of tons of garbage and unwanted material.
Of significance was the fact that the majority of the 100 or so persons who participated in the clean-up at one time or the other between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon were young persons under 20 years. They saw it as a means of working, while having lots of fun.
Sol EC Limited, Highway Trading, Log Enterprises, Richardson Motors Limited and Vinlec rallied to ensure that cleaning implements, refreshments and a meal were available for all participants.
In appreciation of this community effort, a function will be held to present all participants in the Project with Certificates. Fortunately, the beating on the coastline was not delivered by the storm surges, as is customary at this time of year, but by the residents on the garbage and unwanted material deposited thereon.
Avesco will hold a certification programme at the Doris Mckie Learning Centre at 4:00pm on Saturday, September 22, 2007.
