Speaking at the school’s closing ceremony last Friday, Director of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Dr Veronica Marks, encouraged the students to build on what they have learnt and to put it into practice.

She also used the opportunity to urge parents who are knowledgeable about Internet to monitor their children to ensure that they do not have access to websites that can be a detriment them. She reminded them to be mindful of the fact that, while technology can be good and useful, there are also negatives.

Giving an overview of the summer programme, which is into its third year, Business Continuity Manager Haniff Sutherland told the students that when looking at career choices, they should consider Web Designing, as there are a number of job opportunities in that field. He said with that career, persons can work here in St. Vincent and even from the comfort of their own home.

“In this modern society, the Internet is not just for luxury anymore, but rather it is a required tool for enhancing our children’s future,” Sutherland stated.

He said the Internet plays a vital role in today’s society, especially in the workplace, as most of today’s jobs require knowledge of the computer.

This year, the programme dealt with topics ranging from browsing the Internet, to emailing and preparing research information, basic networking and other advanced topics. (SB)
