Frank Jones, Principal of the St.Vincent Grammar School, is satisfied with his schools performance in this yearâs Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and is remaining optimistic that this yearâs fifth form students have the potential take the overall pass rate pass to the 90 per cent mark.{{more}}
The St.Vincent Grammar School played runners up to the Girlsâ High School this year, scoring the second best results nation wide with an 87 per cent pass rate while the girls romped home with an overall pass rate of 92 per cent.
Jones, however, remains confident that though some persons believe that males are underperforming in their academics, the boys at his school have the potential to perform as well as the girls.
This year saw the the school, which will celebrate its centenary next year, scoring a better pass rate than the previous year. Leon Walters, was the schoolâs top performer with eight grade ones and two grade twos. And close on Waltersâ heels were four students who received seven grade ones each with three grade twos.
âIâm satisfied that there is an improvement,â said Jones.
However, he will like to see the programmes at the school designed in such a way that will foster a diversification between mainstream academics and technical subjects. This he said will go a long way in avoiding an academic glut.
Stepping in the direction of change, Jones has reintroduced Technical Drawing and Wood Work as part of the curriculum as well as for the first time Physical Education at the examinations level. (HN)
