Girls’ High School continues to soar
An environment of towering expectations, high standards and a spirit of competitiveness have taken the Girlsâ High School to a realm of academic achievement where it is consistently averaging an over 90 per cent pass rate in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams.{{more}}
This year, the school was adjudged the best performer in the examinations topping all secondary schools in the country with a 92 per cent pass rate. Last year the all girls institution scored 95.3% and the previous year 93%. In 2004, the pass rate was 96.1%.
One student passed 12 subjects, eight students were successful in 11 subjects, 25 students copped 10 subjects, 26 received 9 while 24 got eight passes.
Among the schoolâs laurels were 12 subject areas with 100 per cent passes. The feat was achieved in Principles of Accounts, Electronic Document Preparation Management, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Integrated Science, Home Economic Management, Clothing & Textiles, Physical Education and Sports, Office Administration, Music, Economics and Mathematics (Basic).
This year the Girlsâ High School had an added accomplishment when its Head Girl and 2007 valedictorian Colette Charles was adjudged the nationâs top performer in the CSEC with 11 grades ones (nine distinctions) and two grade twos.
âI am generally pleased. Most of the girls worked well and I congratulate them and their teachers,â said Andrea Bowman in an interview with SEARCHLIGHT.
Bowman added: âThese girls are surrounded by many high expectations and they in turn, expect a lot of themselves. So they set themselves high standards, and they are very competitive,â the principal said, as she explained the factors that contributed to the continued high performance of her school.
Bowman stated that the Girlsâ High School is blessed to have a number of very dedicated teachers who are prepared to go the extra mile âfor our girlsâ.
She said in addition to this, the parents are very supportive and the Parent Teacher Association is vibrant. (HN)
